Typography

From pictogram to type
-pictures to words (alphabet)
  • First humans communicated through speaking and drawing. 3,100 BC (Early Sumerian pictograms) -Signs corresponding to spoken sounds
  • Around 2000 BC Phoenicians created symbols that expressed single syllables and consonants
  • Around 2600 BC the Egyptians used paprius paper
  • 1040 AD Chinese invent movable type
Fonts comes the word (fonte) french -Something that has melted

1874-1878 (First Typewriter)
It was called "Sholes & Glidden Type Writter" produced by gun makers, E. Remington & Sons in Ilion, NY.

1890's-Lynotype
1950's-Phototypesetting designers could produce multiple font sizes.

We were shown lots of different fonts in class.
