Week 5
Technological Innovation

Today's class we looked at figure/ground relationships, framing and hierarchy.
Figure/ground relationships shapes our visual perception. This can be changed to positive and negative space.

  • Creating figure/ground tension adds visual energy to an image or mark
  • In posters, layouts, what is left out frames and balances what is built in
  • Train your eye to carve out what space as you compose with forms (stable, reversible, ambiguous figure)
  • Framing is everywhere. A picture frame sets off a work of art from it's surroundings bringing attention to the work and lifting apart from their settings
  • Margins provide space, protective frame
  • An image without text is open to integration (Can be used as a focal point)
